Core Web Vitals are the metrics Google uses to judge how your site actually feels to a real visitor, and they've been a confirmed ranking factor since 2021. You can write the best content in your market and still slide down the results if your scores are in the red. Here are the three metrics that matter and exactly how to fix each one.

1. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

What it measures: how long the biggest visual element takes to load (usually your hero image or main headline). Threshold: good < 2.5s · needs work 2.5-4s · poor > 4s

How to improve LCP

  • Preload the LCP image with <link rel=”preload”>
  • Add fetchpriority=”high” to the LCP image
  • Use a modern image format (WebP or AVIF)
  • Serve images at the right dimensions (don't load big and scale down)
  • Put static assets on a CDN
  • Cut server response time (TTFB under 200ms)
  • Inline your critical CSS

2. INP (Interaction to Next Paint)

What it measures: the lag between a user action (click, tap, keypress) and the screen responding. Threshold: good < 200ms · needs work 200-500ms · poor > 500ms

How to improve INP

  • Run less JavaScript on the main thread
  • Use code splitting so each page only loads the JS it needs
  • Defer scripts that aren't critical
  • Break up long tasks (anything over 50ms)
  • Push heavy processing to Web Workers
  • Tighten up your event handlers

3. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

What it measures: how much the page jumps around while it loads. Threshold: good < 0.1 · needs work 0.1-0.25 · poor > 0.25

How to improve CLS

  • Set width and height on every single image
  • Reserve space for ads and embeds before they load
  • Don't inject new content above what's already on screen
  • Use font-display: optional, or swap with a fallback font that's close in size
  • Animate with transform instead of top/left/width/height

4. Tools to Measure It

  • PageSpeed Insights (Google)
  • Search Console → Core Web Vitals report
  • Lighthouse CI
  • WebPageTest
  • Chrome DevTools Performance tab

5. A Setup We Recommend for WordPress + Elementor

  • WP Rocket: caching, critical CSS, and lazy loading
  • Smush Pro: image compression and WebP
  • Cloudflare: CDN plus image optimization
  • WP Engine hosting on tuned NGINX
