How Your Business Can Create Authentic Content That Actually Lands
People are more honest and open at work than ever before. Here's how to create authentic content that pulls real customers in, without the performance.

Letting people see the real you can be exactly what speeds up steady, healthy growth for your business. There's something about pulling back the curtain that works like a key. It opens the door to better stories and to connections that actually mean something.
People are showing a level of honesty in their professional lives that we've never really seen before. You've watched it happen on LinkedIn, where vulnerable posts now show up almost daily. The forced distance of the pandemic probably kicked off this new era of openness, one where folks finally say what they mean and mean what they say.
Businesses built around a clear vision, brands that stand for something, would be smart to follow this lead and bring that same openness into their own content. That's what makes it feel real.
So what does authentic, vulnerable content actually look like?
Start by getting your team on the same page about two things honest content is not:
- Authentic communication is not unloading on people. Brands don't usually do this, but people do all the time, and we've all been guilty of it. We've got so much on our minds that we sometimes dump it out and overshare, never stopping to think about our audience or where their head is at. Don't do that as a brand.
- Authentic communication is not for show. Don't fall into performative authenticity. Social media is packed with shock content, posts that exist only to get a reaction. There's also this drift toward a kind of fake intimacy: full of hyperbole, navel-gazing, and sad-face theatrics, where the person posting seems mostly focused on their own performance. Real communication isn't a pose, and it isn't oversharing for sport.
A quick checklist to tell if you're on the right track
Authenticity is a little scary
Here's a good gut check: it should feel a bit hard and a bit nerve-racking. There's real risk in showing parts of your business that usually stay behind closed doors. That's what vulnerability actually means. You don't have to give away trade secrets to share the rough parts of your journey, but it should make you a little uncomfortable.
Authenticity means you genuinely care about your audience
The whole point of your content should be connecting with real people. You need to actually care about what's going on in the minds of the readers you're talking to, almost like you're asking: do you feel this way too?
Authentic business content is still business content
Set KPIs for everything you publish. You're running a business. There's no reason to pretend this is a "dear diary" entry. It shouldn't be too transactional either ("Here's my scary truth. Buy this now for $10.99"), because that comes off even sleazier than a straight "you should buy my product, here's why."
That direct pitch has its place in your content mix, but make sure even your most human, emotional content carries something useful for the reader, something that loops back to your why and your how. Give them a call to action. Ask for feedback. Invite them to share their own stories. Point them to the next piece on the topic. Offer resources, or bring them into an inner circle. Show vulnerability, sure, but not just for the sake of being vulnerable.
It always comes back to delivering value. More and more, it's okay not to have every answer, and to admit you need your customers in the room to build the best product or service you can. That's what earns trust, respect, and a genuine connection. And that lasts a lot longer than shouting at an audience with a million other places to spend their money. Good luck, and be brave.
