llms.txt: what it is and why your site needs one
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that tells AI which of your pages matter most. Here is what it is and how to make one.

Short answer
llms.txt is a text file at your site's root that gives AI a map of your key pages. It helps models understand and cite you more accurately. It's a voluntary standard with no guarantees, but easy to create and maintain — one more step toward being the answer.
llms.txt is a plain-text file that lives at the root of your website (at yourdomain.com/llms.txt) and hands AI models a clean map of your most important pages. Instead of letting ChatGPT or Perplexity guess which parts of your site matter, you tell them directly, in a format they read with no effort. It is a new, voluntary standard, similar in spirit to the old robots.txt but built for the AI era.
I am Leo Brito, and for more than 20 years I have helped Hispanic businesses in Miami get found. This file is one of the simplest things you can set up this week, and one of the best ways to get ready for AI talking about your business. Let's go through it step by step.
What exactly is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a file written in Markdown (the same simple format behind a lot of notes and documents) that you place at the root of your domain. Inside, you put your business name, a short description of what you do, and an organized list of links to your key pages, each one with a sentence explaining what it holds.
The technical community proposed it to solve a specific problem: modern websites are full of menus, buttons, banners, pop-ups, and code that a language model struggles to filter out. llms.txt lets you hand over the essentials as clean text, with no noise. It is like giving the AI assistant the index of your site instead of dropping it at the front door and hoping it finds its way.
There are two versions you will see mentioned:
- llms.txt: the index. It lists your important pages with links and short descriptions.
- llms-full.txt: an expanded version that includes the full content of those pages as plain text, for models that want to read everything at once.
Let's be honest: this is a proposed, voluntary standard. There is no official promise that every AI engine reads it today, the same way that for years certain tags were respected by some search engines and ignored by others. But it costs little to set up, it breaks nothing, and it puts you on the right side of where this is headed.
What is it for, and why does your site need one?
It is there so that when someone asks an AI about a business like yours, the model has a clear, tidy, easy-to-quote source. When your information is clean and well labeled, you raise the odds that the AI understands it correctly and names you with the right facts: your name, your service, your area.
Here are the concrete reasons it is worth it for a Miami business:
- You cut down on mix-ups. If you do not tell the AI which pages matter, it decides on its own, and sometimes it lands on the wrong one or on outdated info.
- You boil your pitch down to one line. The file forces you to describe your business plainly, which is exactly how an AI model wants to receive it.
- You point to your money pages. Services, contact, areas you cover, FAQs. You choose what you want the AI to highlight.
- You get ahead of your competition. Very few local businesses have this file yet. Having it is a cheap edge while it lasts.
llms.txt does not work alone. It is one piece inside a wider strategy of AEO and GEO (answer engine and generative AI optimization). If you want the full picture of how to get AI to recommend your business, read what AEO is and why your business should appear in ChatGPT.
What does an llms.txt file look like inside?
Easier than it sounds. The basic structure uses a main title, a description line, and sections with lists of links. An example for a local business would look like this:
Ready to apply this to your business?
- Title: your business name (for example, "La Esquina Restaurant").
- Description: one line saying what you are and where. "Cuban cooking in Little Havana, Miami."
- Link sections: grouped by topic. Each link with a short description of what the visitor (or the AI) will find there.
As text, a section looks roughly like this, in Markdown:
- # La Esquina Restaurant
- > Cuban cooking in Little Havana, Miami.
- ## Main pages
- - [Menu](https://yourdomain.com/menu): our dishes and prices
- - [Reservations](https://yourdomain.com/reservations): how to book a table
- - [Directions](https://yourdomain.com/location): address and hours
You do not need a programmer for this. You need clarity about which pages matter and what each one says. That clarity, by the way, also helps with everything else in your marketing.
How do you create and publish your llms.txt in 5 steps?
- List your key pages. Home, services or menu, contact, areas served, FAQs. Five to fifteen links is a good starting point.
- Write a one-line description per link. Clear, no fluff, the way you would explain it to a new customer over the phone.
- Build the file in Markdown. Title with #, description with >, and sections with ## and lists of links. Save it as llms.txt in plain text.
- Upload it to the root of your domain. It needs to be reachable at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Your developer or your platform (WordPress, Shopify, Wix) lets you upload files to the root.
- Check it and keep it current. Open it in your browser to confirm it loads. Every time you change a service or an important page, update the file.
One technical detail goes hand in hand with this: make sure your robots.txt lets the AI bots through (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and the rest). If you block them, llms.txt does nothing because the AI never even comes in. We cover that when we talk about how to get ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to name your business.
Does llms.txt replace schema or regular SEO?
No. llms.txt is a complement, not a substitute. It works alongside three things you should already have:
- Solid SEO: useful content, clear titles, a site that loads fast. Without this, the rest floats in midair.
- Schema markup: the structured code that tells search engines and AI what kind of business you are, your hours, and your reviews.
- Content that answers questions: pages and articles that address what your customer actually asks, in their language.
Think of it as layers. SEO makes you findable. Schema makes you understandable. llms.txt makes you easy to summarize and quote. Together, they give AI everything it needs to recommend you with confidence. There is more on how to show up in AI answers in our articles on SEO and AI.
What to remember
llms.txt is a simple text file that hands AI a clean map of your site. It guarantees nothing on its own, but it is cheap, fast to set up, and it puts you ahead of nearly all your local competition. Pair it with good SEO, schema markup, and content that answers real questions, and you are giving ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini everything they need to name you when a customer asks.
At Brito Marketing, we build this AI visibility layer for Hispanic businesses in Miami: from the file to the schema to the content. If you would like us to set it up for you, take a look at our AI search and SEO service, or get in touch and we will review it together, no strings attached.
