Short answer

SEO competes for a click in a list; AEO competes to be the answer. SEO sends traffic from ten blue links; AEO gets AI to name you among two or three options. You don't pick one — you need both on the same solid technical foundation.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) works to rank your business high in Google's list of results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) works to get AI answer engines —ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews— to understand you and recommend you inside their answer. The core difference is this: SEO competes for a click in a list; AEO competes for being the answer. It isn't one or the other; a Miami business today needs both.

What Is SEO and What Is AEO?

SEO is the practice of optimizing your site and your presence to appear high in a search engine's results. Google shows a list of links, and SEO fights to be near the top so people click through to your site. It has sat at the center of digital marketing for more than twenty years, and it still matters.

AEO is the practice of optimizing that same presence so an AI answer engine cites or recommends you when someone asks a question. The key difference: the AI doesn't hand back ten links, it hands back one written answer, sometimes naming two or three businesses. You're either inside that answer or you don't exist for that customer. AEO doesn't replace SEO; it extends it to where people are starting to search.

How Are AEO and SEO Different in Practice?

They share a foundation —a fast site, honest content, real authority— but the goal and the mechanics shift. Here are the differences that actually matter:

  • The outcome. SEO wants a position in a list of links. AEO wants to be named inside an answer the AI writes.
  • The click. In SEO, success is the click to your site. In AEO, there's often no click at all: the value is the AI saying your name, recommending you, and sending the customer over with the decision nearly made.
  • Content format. SEO rewards long, complete pages. AEO rewards clear, easy-to-extract answers: a direct definition up top, short paragraphs, lists, specific questions with their answer right below.
  • Trust. Google leans on links and technical signals. AI models lean heavily on what's said about you in other sources —reviews, directories, press, mentions— not just your own website.
  • The competition. In SEO you compete with the whole first page. In AEO you compete for two or three slots in a single answer, so the prize is more concentrated and harder to share.

If you want the full picture of how all of this fits together, we lay it out in our AEO guide to getting named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.

Why Does This Matter Now and Not Next Year?

It matters for a simple reason: the behavior already changed. Google rolled out AI Overviews in 2024, and today plenty of people read that AI summary instead of scrolling down to the links. More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini directly for things they used to search on Google. For a local business, that means a slice of your potential customers is already making decisions inside an AI answer, not in a list of results.

There's also a real timing edge. Very few Hispanic businesses in Miami are working on AEO yet. The one that structures its information well, tends its reviews, and becomes a trusted source today gets into those answers before the space fills up. The one that waits arrives after the competition has already taken the two or three available slots.

Do I Have to Choose Between AEO and SEO?

No. The short answer is you need both, and the good news is they're built on the same base. A fast site, with clean HTML, honest content, and a well-documented business helps both Google and the AI. The difference is in the layers you add on top:

  1. Start with the shared foundation. Speed, semantic structure, and content that genuinely answers what your customer is asking. This holds up both SEO and AEO.
  2. Make the AI understand you. Document your business clearly —who you are, where you are, what you offer— and keep that information consistent, starting with your Google Business Profile.
  3. Build trust off your own site. Real reviews, consistent listings (same name, address, and phone everywhere), and mentions in sources the AI already treats as credible.
  4. Write so you can be quoted. Direct answers, FAQs phrased as actual questions, and data in text rather than buried inside images.

For a Miami business there's one extra piece that can't be missing: the local angle. Showing up when someone asks "who's the best for this near me?" has its own mechanics, and we cover it in Local SEO: how to show up first when people search your business in Miami.

How Do I Start with AEO Without Dropping SEO?

You don't have to throw away anything you've already done. The SEO you have is the starting point; AEO is the layer you add on top. A sensible order to begin:

  • Check that the AI can read you. If your site ranks on Google but is built with poor structure or info trapped inside images, the models don't understand you well. That can be measured and fixed.
  • Go after ChatGPT first. It's where the most question volume is happening. We have the step-by-step in what AEO is and why your business should appear in ChatGPT.
  • Tend your reviews and listings. They're among the signals that weigh most when an AI decides to recommend you over someone else; here's our guide to getting quality Google reviews.
  • Measure and adjust. Ask the AIs yourself about your field in your area and see if you come up. If you don't, you know where to work.

At bottom, AEO and SEO don't compete with each other; they compete against your competition, together. SEO keeps you on Google while Google still sends traffic; AEO puts you where people are starting to search. Working only one leaves half the map uncovered.
